Map by SMI showing Transit Accessibility for Transit Scenario

Project: Vision 2030-Shaping the Region’s Future Together

Client: Baltimore Regional Partnership

About the Project: With a backdrop of suburban growth, urban decay, water quality degradation in the Chesapeake Bay, and concerns about social inequity and access to jobs, the Baltimore Metropolitan Council initiated a multi-disciplinary visioning process that will be integrated into the next regional long range transportation plan. This included defining four possible futures for the region, in terms of land use development and public investment strategies: continuation of current trends, and alternative scenarios emphasizing investments in road capacity, mass transit, or re-development of urban areas.

SMI’s Role: SMI developed alternative future land use and transportation scenarios, and prepared transportation, social and environmental indicators for each scenario. SMI enhanced the regional travel demand model using TP+ software so that it could provide indicators of land consumption, fuel consumption, accessibility to transit, and mode shares. These were used in a public outreach survey, developed by ACP Associates in Community Planning and Visioning, to allow the public to state their preferences and indicate their priorities.

Survey prepared by ACP Planning and Visioning, Inc, uses indicators developed by SMI.

Current Status: We completed this work which included defining the future scenarios, preparing detailed land use forecasts, running regional travel demand model, and developing indicators for use in public outreach. (For more information, please see: www.baltometro.org.)
